A Brief History Of Interlocking Pavers

The concept of interlocking pavers has been around for thousands of years. One of the first examples of interlocking pavers can be seen in Rome where a highway system was built over 2000 years ago. Although great advances have been made in the techniques used to manufacture and install pavers, the fundamentals are still the same.

Although pavers were used in the 1800 and early 1900’s, their popularity waned during the middle of the 20th century in the United States. The idea of pavers has always been very popular in Europe and continues to be at present. Through the mid 80’s, 90’s and into the new millennium, their popularity has been renewed here in the U.S., and tremendous growth in the paver industry should continue for many years to come.

Why Should You Use Interlocking Pavers?

Interlocking pavers, when installed properly are on average, 2 to 3 times stronger than the same feature (driveway, lanai, etc.) done using concrete. This is due to the simple fact that pavers are part of a “flexible” pavement system. Pavers will distribute the load through the paver and into the sand, base and sub-base below, unlike concrete. When it comes time for maintenance, pavers beat other pavement systems hands down!
  • Pavers do not crack like concrete
  • Repair of pavers is easy—simply remove and replace!

In addition to their strength and longevity, pavers can provide a number of other benefits. Most people would agree that pavers provide a better and more dignified look than traditional concrete or even stamped and patterned concrete. Because of this, pavers can often lead to increasing the value of your home. In some instances, an upgrade to pavers can assist builders and homeowners alike in the speedy sale of a residence.
